Changing habits - ours!

There’s a lot we can all do in order to lessen our footprint on the planet.  This year, the human race had used up the earth’s resources for one year in about 8 months, leaving 4 months where we were beyond what the earth can sustainably provide for the whole year.

If there’s anything you can do to lessen your impact on the planet, please do it.  There are a huge number of websites around with ideas, but a starting point might be to consider questions such as:

  • What can you cut down on?  E.g. using solar instead, eating less meat, less water, fewer car journey

  • What can you recycle?  E.g. catch rainwater for watering the garden, buying recycling goods

  • What can you produce yourself? E.g. herbs, salads, vegetables, fruit, cakes, biscuits, bread, clothing, pedal power on a bike

  • What plastic do you end up with each month?  How can you stop using it?  What can you use instead?

  • What could you do to turn your garden and home into a wildlife haven?  E.g. put a bird feeder on the window, make a hole in your garden for a hedgehog to pass through, giving wildlife a small pond (sink size will do) with a slope to climb out

Look to see what technology wildlife conservation charities have which you could use to help you make informed decisions about what you buy.  For instance, the Marine Conservation Society has a Good Fish Guide app to help you buy sustainable fish.  The Vegetarian Society has an app with recipes. They are trying to make it easy for us all to make informed choices knowing we are short on time.
