"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." Margaret Mead, American anthropologist, 1901-1978
Around the world, there are many groups of committed people who are making sure wildlife have what they need to survive and thrive. The more of us who join in, the greater an impact we will have!
January and February are busy bird months, with several bird counts going on for people of all ages! There's the RSPB's Big School Birdwatch and the Big Garden Birdwatch (that's the 23 to 25 January), as well as the Big Farmland Bird Count and the Global Bird Count in February, it's a good time to see what garden birds you know and improve your knowledge!
Of course on the back of these counts come National NestBox Week in February - starting on Valentine's Day. Show our feathered friends some love with a nest box if you can! Find out more here.
If you're able to, don't miss Wild London on BBC1 at 18:30 on New Year's Day! Sir David Attenborough looks at wildlife in London and there really is an amazing array of wildlife right across the city. From peregrine falcons to foxes, hedgehogs to beavers, London has about 18,000 species! Find out more about the programme here and visit the London Wildlife Trust here.
Sir David Attenborough is backing a bid by the Wildlife Trusts to raise £30 million to buy a vast upland estate. The Rothbury Estate covers 15 square miles, and the Trust has plans to boost wildlife, restore bogs and also promote nature-friendly farmers. The Trust has until September 2026 to raise the funds required - find out more here.
Bottom trawling is very damaging to marine life and our seas, as the video from Devon Wildlife Trust shows. However, there is something we can all do to give marine life and the sea a voice - we can act for them. Please sign this petition to support measures to ban bottom trawling in seabed Marine Protected Areas. The Devon Wildlife Trust also has a Save Devon's Seas appeal - find out more here.
Those fabulous people at the Amphibian and Conservation Trust and the Freshwater Habitats Trust have a new 32 page booklet you can download to help you if you want to create a wildlife pond! It doesn't need to be huge as the video on the right from the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust shows. We put a pond into our garden during lockdown, and it's been wonderful to see the difference it's made. The more of us who can do something like this, the more impact we will all have. Find out more and download the brochure here.

Individuals and workplace groups can really make a difference and have an impact! And there's a great example coming from Australia with the Koala Clancy Foundation where groups of people have come together to plant trees and help koalas and other wildlife. And there's plenty of other things you can do to help as well - even if you don't live in Australia! Action has impact!
Borrowdale is the largest temperate rainforest in the UK - it's in the beautiful Lake District. Temperate rainforests are vital carbon stores, and home to animals, plants and fungi!. And Borrowdale has just become a protected nature reserve, as a result of a decision by Natural England and the National Trust! You can find out all about it here.
The little African penguin needs our help. The penguins' numbers have plummeted and organisations are working together to try to ensure these charismatic animals have a future. Find out how you can help here.
The book "Earthshot" says that you and I can be part of the problem facing the planet - or we can be part of the solution. Two things we can do is to protect the natural world and to reduce our impact. "Urgency + Optimism = Action."
There's a website aiming to educate people into why you shouldn't poison bats you find in your home - it's a wonderful resource. Find out more here
