Bird TV programmes all round in the UK!
Wow, there are two great series (well, I think they are great!) on our screens in the UK now.
BBC1 has Sir David Attenborough presenting Secret Gardens. I think it’s just wonderful to see what people are doing to help wildlife in their gardens. On Sunday (12th April), the programme was in Bristol where a number of neighbours had come together to provide a Hedgehog Highway for hedgehogs. The programme moves around the country, visiting secret gardens in Oxfordshire, Bristol, the Lake District, the Wye Valley and the Western Highlands. It runs on Sunday afternoons on BBC1.
Visit the Secret Garden’s website here.
It’s so important that programmes like this show what actions you can take to help wildlife – and I believe it’s just as important to show that people are actually DOING it. In the case of the hedgehogs and providing a way for them to get from one garden to another to find a mate, I was reminded of Hedgehog Street. This is a joint initiative between the British Hedgehog Preservation Society and the People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) and it’s got 100,000 people who have registered to be Hedgehog Champions and help hedgehogs.
Another treat in store for us all this week in the UK is on Channel 5.
Sam & Ade Go Birding features Samuel West (All Creatures Great and Small) and Ade Edmondson.
In search of our feathered friends, the hope is that they will encourage lots of people to go birding and take an interest in birds and other wildlife. The programme starts in West Cornwall with choughs and herons. There’s beautiful countryside, the comeraderie between the two men, and the passionate interest that Samuel West has in birding.
In 2026, this week takes place from 27 April to 3 May. It's inviting us all to slow down, look closer , looking closer and - as the RHS says - discover the small wonders that bring outdoor spaces to life. In short, in 2026, it's about celebrating the simple pleasures of being in the garden. And the RHS has 5 ways to help birds in every season.
The 14th April is World Puffin Day - a perfect opportunity to ask the question, How do puffins say I love you?
This year, over half a million people took part in the RSPB's Big Garden Birdwatch - it takes place in January each year. But who took the number one slot?
