Create a koala hub!

There’s news from the Koala Clancy Foundation in Australia.
They are encouraging people to create “Koala Hubs” – basically, these are habitats for koalas and the native birds.
A koala hub is just the thing for those areas which farm machinery can’t access – tight forested bends. They have harbour weeds and feral pests. And they tend to hold water in droughts – the bends are usually cool in the summer.
Koalas needs of wide blocks of habitats with different species of trees and shrubs. So revegetation of the river bends could be the least costly, most effective way to help koalas – whilst causing the least disturbance to landowners.
The Koala Clancy Foundation has a fact sheet - Melbourne Water Fact Sheet 2 - you can download on how to create a koala hub.
It’s got answers to questions you may have such as how wide should the hub be? What trees should be planted?
And there are a couple of examples to show you with a “before” and “after”.
Please spread the word, even if you can’t create your own hub you can help inspire others who are in a position to do it to create one!
This is an urgent need. The Koala Clancy Foundation says that along the Western Plains rivers, there are very few trees even in the river bends. They face challenges to their survival such as insect dieback, disease and drought. The Foundation says that the best way to preserve these trees is through revegetation and fencing.
Please hop off to find out more here and, if you can't help with creating a koala hub, see what else you can do to help koalas!
